چکیده

Abstract Transport of a particle in a spatially periodic harmonic potential under the influence of a slowly time-dependent unbiased periodic external force is studied. The equations of motion are the same as in the problem of a slowly forced nonlinear pendulum. Using methods of the adiabatic perturbation theory we show that for a periodic external force of general kind the system demonstrates directed (ratchet) transport in the chaotic domain on very long time intervals and obtain a formula for the average velocity of this transport. Two cases are studied: the case of the external force of small amplitude, and the case of the external force with amplitude of order one. The obtained formulas can also be used in case of a non-harmonic periodic potential.

Slowly rocking symmetric, spatially periodic Hamiltonians: The role of escape and the emergence of giant transient directed transport

The nonintegrable Hamiltonian dynamics of particles placed in a symmetric, spatially periodic potential and subjected to a periodically varying field is explored. Such systems can exhibit a rich diversity of unusual transport features. In particular, depending on the setting of the initial phase of the drive, the possibility of a giant transient directed transport in a symmetric, space-periodic...

Non-monotonic resonance in a spatially forced Lengyel-Epstein model.

We study resonant spatially periodic solutions of the Lengyel-Epstein model modified to describe the chlorine dioxide-iodine-malonic acid reaction under spatially periodic illumination. Using multiple-scale analysis and numerical simulations, we obtain the stability ranges of 2:1 resonant solutions, i.e., solutions with wavenumbers that are exactly half of the forcing wavenumber. We show that t...

Directed chaos in a billiard chain with transversal magnetic field

In generic Hamiltonian systems with a mixed phase space chaotic transport may be directed and ballistic rather than diffusive. We investigate one particular model showing this behaviour, namely a spatially periodic billiard chain in which electrons move under the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We analyze the phase-space structure and derive an explicit expression for the chaotic t...

From collective periodic running states to completely chaotic synchronised states in coupled particle dynamics.

We consider the damped and driven dynamics of two interacting particles evolving in a symmetric and spatially periodic potential. The latter is exerted to a time-periodic modulation of its inclination. Our interest is twofold: First, we deal with the issue of chaotic motion in the higher-dimensional phase space. To this end, a homoclinic Melnikov analysis is utilised assuring the presence of tr...
